The Memories That Make Us
Our spotlight artist for Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month, Cecilia Ruiz, created this exclusive tote inspired by the idea that memories can bring about comfort, gratitude, and inspiration for the lives we want to create. Our upbringings remind us of who we were, who we are, and who we want to be.
About Cecilia’s Design
"This image is inspired by the traditional Mexican pottery sculpture called 'Arbol de la Vida' (Tree of Life). This abstract tree structure contains fragments of my childhood at my grandparent’s house—family members, fruits we ate, flowers that grew in the backyard, games we played, etc. I like how the tree structure holds and connects everything."
Q: How do you think being Latinx has shaped your art?
“I think Mexican culture has had an impact in terms of the themes I visit and revisit as an artist. All the books I have written and illustrated touch on themes related to memory and death, and Mexican culture is known for being a culture that confronts death directly, even dances with it. Growing up with a tradition like “Día de Muertos”— a tradition that celebrates death as part of life and that gives people pause to honor and remember the dead, is something I’m sure has impacted my art.”
