Minimizing our ecological footprint is a priority at Hero, during Earth Month and all year long. Right now, we’re working toward a more sustainable future by switching to responsibly sourced FSC-certified packaging and working with an environmental consultant to reduce our carbon footprint. Through donations to the Carbonfund.org, we’ve offset a whopping 1056 metric tonnes of our business and shipping emissions! But what exactly does that mean? Read on to find out in our interview with Linda Kelly, the Vice President of Business Partnerships at Carbon Fund Foundation.
Tell us what Carbon Fund is all about.
Carbonfund.org is leading the fight against climate change, making it easy and affordable for any individual, business or organization to reduce and offset their climate impact and hasten the transition to a clean energy future.
Carbonfund.org achieves those goals through: climate change education, carbon offsets and reductions, and public outreach.
We’re so excited that Hero has offset 1,056 metric tonnes of carbon emissions, but can you explain to our readers what that actually means?
Hero calculated the 2020 estimated annual carbon emissions created by the energy use of offices, employee air travel and product shipping. The total was 1,056 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is over 2.3 million pounds of CO2 emissions! Hero then made a donation to Carbonfund.org, and we used those funds to purchase and retire 1056 carbon credits from projects that are reducing carbon dioxide emissions — like renewable energy and forest conservation projects. One carbon credit equals the reduction, removal or sequestration of one metric tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere, so by making this donation, Hero has neutralized or offset the negative environmental impact of its 2020 operating emissions.
To give you an idea of the impact of neutralizing that quantity of emissions, Hero would have needed to plant 17,500 trees ten years ago and have all of those trees survive and sequester carbon dioxide during those ten years to achieve the same environmental benefits.
What sort of carbon footprint does a person leave in a year? Can individuals offset their carbon emissions?
On average, an individual in the U.S. has an annual carbon footprint of about 24 metric tonnes, or about 53,000 pounds, of greenhouse gas emissions. Individuals can make personal donations to offset some or all of their carbon footprint at Carbonfund.org.
Do you have any tips for a person trying to reduce their carbon footprint?
Absolutely! To reduce their carbon footprint, individuals can:
- Reduce home/apartment energy usage by lowering thermostat temperatures in cold weather and increasing them in warm weather.
- Cut down on business and personal travel by continuing the virtual work and social habits we’ve learned in the past year.
- Make donations to Carbonfund.org to support third-party validated and verified carbon offset projects that are producing renewable energy, using new energy-efficient technologies or protecting forestlands around the world.
